Rusedski headed to the tennis courts set up in Old Market Square to encourage locals to get involved in tennis.

Hundreds of people picked up a racket to play on the inflatable courts as part of the free event organised by the Lawn Tennis Association.

The forty-one year old finalist in the U.S. Open, who played in the Aegon Open Nottingham in 1997 and 2003, spent the day encouraging fans, taking pictures with them and showcasing his skills.

Antonia Flanders, the Nottingham participation officer, says he helped her in her job to get more people to play at grass-roots level.

“I think the future is really bright for British tennis,” she said.
