Dolly Parton wants Nottingham children to read from 9-5

71971564_29fe579939East midlands’ audiences have been treated to a message from the country and western singer as she launches her project in the City.

The scheme aims to buy one book a month for every young child in Nottingham.

Her project has been running in Bilborough, Hyson Green, Radford, Lenton and Dunkirk for many years.

Nottingham City Council say only 60% of four year olds meet expected reading standards – 14% less than the national average.

It is hoped that the campaign can be expanded to other areas in the county in order to improve literacy rates in the region .

The ‘Jolene’ singer has also joined a list of celebrities in using the phrase “ay up me duck” in her message to Nottingham.
