Student campaign raises £3000 for Nottingham fire victims

0430_2The appeal was launched to help students who were forced to find alternative homes after the fire broke out in the Student Lodge in Player Street four weeks ago.

Shahin Munir, who lives in the part of the building which was not severely damaged, started the fund a week after the fire began. Once a final amount has been raised, the donations will be divided equally to all the students who have been affected.

The 25-year-old said:” These forty-one people who lived in that building, most of which are international students, they came here to start their lives and go to university. I think that’s why this touched a lot of people”

0430_1Valuable items including passports, ID cards, laptops and study materials were all destroyed in the fire.

Half of the building was being converted into a student accommodation and was partly demolished as the fire fighters tried to find the source of the blaze.

IMPAC, an association of former Imperial Tobacco workers, is also planning to launch a fundraising campaign as well.
