Sikh festival adds colour to streets of Nottingham.

Vaisakhi – Nottingham’s largest annual procession took place this weekend with colours, musicians and singers filling the streets.

The annual gathering of the community included a showcase of martial arts, bhangra dancing and drumming. The day consisted of a four and a half hour walk through the city and lots of free food given out along the way.

Vaisakhi, one of the most celebrated days in the Sikh calendar, is important for the Sikh community because it is a celebration of the New Year and the anniversary of the founding of  ‘The Khalsa’; the community of “fully-initiated” Sikhs, in 1699 by the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.
