Beeston anger as tram works delayed and gas line needs replacing

_79502306_beestonBusinesses and residents in Beeston affected by months of disruption because of tram works have been told that there will be further problems.

Building work on the £570m line in Beeston was originally due to end in 2013,  but it is now expected to finish in early 2015.

It has been confirmed that work will be further delayed due to an old  gas pipe having to be replaced. The work will focus on an area off High Road and a popular location known as ‘The Square’.

Residents have vented their anger as the gas main works will mean digging up part of a pedestrianised area only just re-laid after tram works.

Sarah Wilcox, from National Grid, said they had been liaising with the city and county councils and tram contractors to co-ordinate the work, attempting to minimise disruption.

The company has said that they are hoping to complete the work in the ”first quarter of next year”.
