Calorie Count on Alcohol to Combat Obesity

Picture for story calorie countCalorie information is now to be put on alcohol in a new proposition to tackle the growing problem of obesity in Britain.

Reports from the Health and Social Care Information Centre show that the proportion of adults with a normal Body Mass Index (BMI) has decreased from 41% in men in 1993 to 32.1% in 2012.

Nicki Gilbert, a registered dietician and sport and exercise specialist at the University of Nottingham, doesn’t think these figures are at all surprising.

‘I don’t think the general public really recognise the calories in a lot of foods, let alone the calories in drinks. The general awareness of calories is just not as great as of that in foods.’

A recent report from the Royal Society of Public Health shows that 80% of the public could not correctly estimate the calorie content in alcohol.
