Desmond D’mello , the dentist who caused the biggest patient recall in UK medical history, may have to contribute to the £500,000 cost of the operation.
Speaking to Notts TV today, Doug Black, Medical Director of NHS England in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire said: “People within NHS England will be clearly considering it but it’s not our decision.”
“A decision of this nature would require a national, senior view on what to do.”
He said that the NHS is currently footing the bill for the £500,000 cost of carrying out blood tests at Highcroft Medical Centre in Arnold as well as an advice line at a call centre.
He was visiting the centre today to appeal for more people to be tested for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C after covert video footage showed D’Mello ignoring basic hygiene routines.
So far more than 3000 people have been tested but the numbers coming forward are falling day to day.
The advice line and the medical centre is open from 8 am to 8 pm 7 days a week for patients to get tested until Christmas.
