MP John Mann has spoken after a 7-year-old girl from his constituency of Bassetlaw was injured when a gun was accidentally fired at Nottinghamshire police HQ.
In a tweet posted on November 6 the MP stated: “Lots of questions unanswered after police accidently shoot a child from Bassetlaw at Notts Police HQ”
The accident happened on October 30 around 12.15pm during a school visit to Sherwood lodge in Arnold but was only revealed to the public a week after the incident took place.
The girl received a minor injury to her lip after a police issued firearm was accidently discharged at the end of a talk by police officers.
The empty cartridge ricocheted off the floor and hit her in the face.
The girl was part of a group of school children who were visiting the forces headquarters along with their parents after winning a colouring competition.
They were being shown specialist services including dogs, firearms and traffic cars.
The police officer involved has been taken of firearm duties while the investigation is taking place.
Nottinghamshire’s Assistant Chief Constable Simon Torr said: “We are conducting a thorough inquiry to determine exactly how this unfortunate incident happened and have also referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
“We have spoken to the parents who were visiting force headquarters with their children to explain what happened and have apologised for any distress caused.”
