Serious skills shortage threatens the growth of Nottingham businesses

Chamber of Commerce PicBusiness leaders are warning that a serious shortage of skilled workers is threatening the region’s economic recovery.

According to a report by the Chamber of Commerce, 45% of local businesses trying to recruit new staff in the first three months of this year couldn’t find a suitable candidate.

Employers say that not having enough skilled staff is preventing them from growing.

The Chamber of Commerce report has warned that some school leavers do not have the basic English and Maths skills to qualify for apprenticeships.

“It’s getting worse as more companies are now on the recruitment trail. There’s a lot of jobs out there, but we don’t have people with the right ambition or the right skills necessary to fill those posts,”  says George Cowcher of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber wants apprenticeships to better reflect the real world and for more businesses to team up with schools to create work related experiences.

If the skills gap is not filled, the Chamber fears that unemployment rates will increase and that there will be more frustration in store for job seekers.
