Nottingham is at the top of the league for independent businesses in the region with more shops than Manchester and Birmingham.
Nottingham is in better shape for trading diversity than any city outside London, according to the city council.
It claims to have 204 independent goods retailers in the city. Many larger cities have far fewer. Manchester has 190 independent shops and Birmingham has only 148.
“You can survive and thrive if you believe in yourself” – Stephen Holland, Independent Business Owner at Page 45
Stephen Holland, Co-creator and Independent Business Owner of the comic book store, Page 45 in Nottingham, said: “I think Nottingham is doing really very well – it’s a shame about shops such as Selectadisc that have gone out of business. I know people who moved to Nottingham just to be a part of the independent sector.
“I strongly believe, though, that you can survive and you can thrive if you believe in yourself, put the effort in and you love your customers.”
Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Jobs and Growth, said: “We fully appreciate the importance to our retail and leisure offer of having a diverse and unique selection of retail outlets and leisure venues. It’s what sets us apart.”
