Newark Northgate StationBritish Transport Police (BTP) are appealing for a ‘witness’ to come forward who might have seen a railway worker being hit by a train at Newark Northgate Station. John Wright, 49, from Doncaster died in hospital after being struck on 22 January, the BTP are trying to trace a man who is believed to be a witness of the event.

South Africa MinersRescue workers are currently trying to free around 30 miners, trapped in an abandoned gold mine in South Africa. So far seven miners have been retrieved. The mine is situated in Benoni, east of Johannesburg. Rescue worker Roggers Mamaila says they’re currently trying to remove a huge piece of concrete to speed up the rescue.

Part of the line will be shut for six weeks while repairs take place. A replacement bus service will be running between Sheffield and Chesterfield during the time of repairs.

HorsesMore than 20,000 people have joined a Facebook campaign after two horses died in flooded fields near Leicester. Farrier Mark Johnson set up the Facebook page after he and his son discovered a horse trapped in waterlogged ground last Saturday, the horse had to later be put down.

Elise ChristieNottingham’s Elise Christie has made it through to the quarter-finals of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Christie powered through with the third fastest time in the short track speed skating 1,000m event. So far Christie has not had the best games being disqualified from two events.

Pendragon new car sales rise 15.6%Demand for British car brands Jaguar and Land Rover has given a boost to Nottingham-based car dealership Pendragon, as they reported today a 14% rise in annual profits. The haul of £38.9 million follows a good year for the UK car industry, with Europe’s second largest market growing by 11% to 2.26 million registrations.

ObesityNotts County Council has launched a tender process to provide substance misuse and obesity prevention and weight management services. It comes amid claims that changes to drug and alcohol services in Bassetlaw would cause chaos in the district.
